Whilst getting his degree, Herkner was already focusing on designing objects and furniture merging various cultural contexts and combining new technologies with traditional craftsmanship. He believed this way he could highlight and enhance the “multifaceted beauty of the materials”.

It was also during his college years that Sebastian Herkner had the opportunity to do an internship with designer Stella McCartney in London, which helped to sharpen his feeling for materials, colors, structures and textures.

Finally, in 2006, the designer founded his own studio in Offenbach am Main. Since then, he’s been designing for houses like ClassiCon, Dedon, Rosenthal, Gubi and Pulpo, for which he’s designed Oda floor lamp collection.

According to Sebastian Herkner’s studio itself, “Oda is a reservoir of light”. The oversized floor lamp is perfect for an open spaced living room, for example. What Herkner was going for when designing it was “to create a volume or even balloon full with light”.

The design was inspired by the amazing pictures of water towers shooted by German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher. This made possible to build a simple and elegant metal structure balancing a mouthblown tinted glass globe. Oda.
