Montone and Loc know that they have a full house – A dog, a child, and friends would be circulating in and out of the apartment, leaving zero room for anything less than a comfortable and functional scheme. So, patterned rugs and works from artists live up uncluttered, clean lines.
The couple’s radiators were transformed with custom-designed and -built wood paneling. The forebears of the midcentury-modern movement were hugely invigorated by Japanese design.
Lighting fixtures always make a small space feel bigger but the use of pretty and functional fixtures, contribute to the illusion by drawing the eye.
In a small space like this, between coziness and claustrophobia there’s a very thin line. A neutral range of colors moderates the warmth of custom millwork. Don’t overlook all-white bedding as a way to cheat your way into relaxation.
If it’s beautiful, comfortable and expressive, then it has a place here.
